Discipline: The Unsexy Middle

Everyone loves the decision. That moment when everyone is excited and motivated to began a new thing! It’s bold. It’s emotional. It feels powerful. But the decision is only the first brick. Discipline is the part no one claps for. Why? Because discipline is often seen as boring – restrictive even. That’s why most people quit. That’s why I quit.

For years, I embraced being a free spirit. Creative. Spontaneous. Vision-led. I thought freedom meant doing what I felt in the moment. But here’s what I learned: Undisciplined freedom creates chaos- no matter how well intentioned. (Ask me how I know???) But disciplined structure creates actual freedom.

Two years ago, a friend asked me to choose a word that represented what I wanted to improve and focus on for the year. For the past two years, I’ve chosen one word to anchor my life: Discipline. -And it has changed everything! Discipline didn’t look like overnight success. It still doesn’t. It’s a new journey for me and I’m loving the views.

Discipline looked and still looks like:

  • Saying no to shiny things – shiny deals, shiny clothes, shiny distractions
  • Exercising when I don’t feel like it
  • Delaying gratification
  • Repairing and strengthening my credit
  • Studying financing structures and capital stacks
  • Becoming licensed as a mortgage loan officer

Discipline meant choosing long-term wealth over short-term dopamine. It meant logging in to study when I didn’t feel like it. It meant organizing finances instead of fantasizing about the next business idea that I wanted to jump into out of pure emotion. It meant partnering strategically instead of proving I could do it alone.

As an artist, one thing I know for sure is that you can’t rush art: You layer it. You build depth slowly. You step back. You adjust. You refine. Real estate — real wealth — is no different. When commitment meets discipline, structure forms. When commitment lacks discipline, it collapses. That’s the part people don’t want to hear. You can be committed emotionally. You can post about it. You can talk about it. But without daily discipline? It crumbles.

The more disciplined I’ve become, the freer I feel. My mind is clearer. My decisions are cleaner. My finances are more intentional. Structure has given me more freedom than spontaneity ever did. Because discipline builds options. And options are freedom. Most people fall in love with the vision. Few fall in love with the process. But the process is the point. When we are serious about building assets, we spend more time in the quiet discipline phase than the exciting acquisition phase. And that’s okay! That’s where solid foundations are poured!
